Growth of cosmetic surgery in Dubai has pros and cons
04 January 2019
The popularity of cosmetic surgery in Dubai has soared in recent years, and in turn there has been a huge increase in the number of plastic surgery clinics offering a range of cosmetic procedures. Of course, it is always nice to have choice, and Dubai is now becoming recognised as a real mecca of cosmetic surgery, but there is also a growing concern over the effects this is having on both price and quality of work.
For many clinics in Dubai and the other emirates, an increase in competition has naturally pushed the average price of a cosmetic procedure down, and though on the face of it this may seem like good news for patients, the bad news is that the average quality of work has also suffered as cosmetic clinics are not currently regulated, therefore there may be a gulf in standards from one plastic surgeon to the next.
Seeking additional authority to oversee cosmetic industry
The Emirates Plastic Surgery Society (EPSS) have recently revealed that they are seeking additional authority to oversee the industry and its standards, so there is an expectation and hope among reputable plastic surgeons that things will soon improve across the board, and that the general quality can return to the high levels we command and expect from every surgeon and clinic.
Competition among plastic surgeons and cosmetic clinics in Dubai and the rest of the UAE should be based purely on quality, not on a difference in price. Us reputable plastic surgeons want our patients to undergo their cosmetic procedures with us here in Dubai because we are better and offer the highest quality surgery - something which many reputable and highly accredited surgeons here do indeed offer - but we want to do all that we can to ensure it’s something that every licensed plastic surgeon offers, without exception.
Dubai offers highest concentration of plastic surgeons
According to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Dubai currently offers the highest concentration of plastic surgeons in any one city across the world, with 236 licensed plastic surgeons and 386 licensed dermatologists offering plastic surgery and dermatology services in 277 different facilities.
As well as Dubai residents, many patients also come from oversees, and plastic surgery is now one of the five leading popular procedures for health tourism. The DHA claim that licensing of plastic surgeons involves thorough examinations, with physicians being evaluated following strict licensing regulations in terms of ethical, moral and social responsibility. The DHA and reputable plastic surgeons alike just want to ensure that every person who accesses the industry in Dubai for a cosmetic procedure benefits from safe healthcare of the highest quality.
