Liposuction surgery explained

Liposuction - waist being measuredCelebrities on the big screen and models in glossy magazines often have the slim and slender figure that so many people dream of. A healthy, well-balanced diet full of the right nutrition and a consistent exercise regime is something that we can all incorporate into our lifestyle to help us work towards achieving and maintaining a body that we can be proud of. For those who are at an optimum weight and who have already given diet and exercise a fair go, there is still a popular cosmetic procedure that you can consider turning to - liposuction.

Many celebrities themselves have undergone the liposuction procedure, and it's a procedure that I offer right here in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates where a growing number of people are considering the option, and all with good reason.

What does liposuction involve?

Liposuction has been one of the more popular cosmetic procedures for many years, and it simply involves the removal of fat from certain areas of the body to create a tighter and more toned aesthetic appearance. For men, this fat is usually found around the buttocks, abdomen and chest areas, and for women, it’s usually seen over the hips, buttocks, waist and breasts. Liposuction typically involves several very small incisions that allow a stainless hollow tube called a cannula to be inserted over the layer of fat. This cannula then breaks the fat cells before the fat is removed through a syringe or vacuum pump.

Different types of liposuction

There are four different types of liposuction surgery. These are called the tumescent technique, super wet technique, ultraviolet assisted liposuction - often referred to as UAL, and the power liposuction technique.

The ultraviolet assisted liposuction is divided into two types of ultrasound cannulas, which include the solid probe and the hollow core probe.

Benefits of the liposuction surgery procedure

People are attracted to liposuction surgery due to the fantastic benefits that the results can achieve. These benefits include the safe removal of fat from specific areas of the body (especially areas where fat is notoriously difficult to shift) and reduced levels of cellulite resulting in an improvement in its appearance. These lead to a boost in personal confidence and can help you feel better about things you may have been self-conscious of previously.

Risks of opting for liposuction surgery

That vast majority of liposuction procedures pass with no worrying complications at all, but as with all cosmetic surgery or medical procedures, there is always an element of risk involved - even with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

A reputable surgeon will of course reduce the chance of risk significantly and you will discuss these prior to the operation, but things to be aware of include:

  • Bruising
  • Anaesthesia risks
  • Change in skin sensation
  • Damage to nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs and abdomen organs
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Build-up of fluid
  • Infection
  • Irregular contours
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Swelling
  • Poor healing
  • Rippling or loose skin
  • Thermal burn or heat injury from the UAL technique
